I will be writing a series of quick tips on how to create your own scripts. I am going to start with the basics and please ask your questions in the comments below. Your comments will help guide the class and what lessons I teach. So ask away and I will do my best to help!
QUICK TIP 1
Every script idea starts with three key elements.
1. Setting
2. Characters
3. Plot
These can be developed in any order. The plot can come first or the characters or the setting.
You can start with the SETTING and decide WHEN and WHERE it takes place. With a stage play, it's best to pick ONE location. It's possible to do multiple locations but it makes the play more difficult to produce. So ideally, select ONE SINGLE location for the setting.
For characters, you will decide WHO is in your story. Who are the main characters of your story? Come up with names and personalities for your characters. The setting or plot may affect the types of characters you select or the characters may affect the setting and plot.
The plot is the why and how of the script. How does the story start? Why is the story important? How will the characters interact? Why is the setting important? Use why and how questions to help you develop the plot.
In review, before writing develop the SETTING (when and where), CHARACTERS (who) and PLOT (why and how).
