"Kiss Me I'm Irish" St. Patrick's Day comedy stage play script - teaching about stereotypes

"Kiss Me I'm Irish"
by D. M. Larson

A play for four actors (1 male and 3 female)

This is a fun play for teaching about stereotypes in a non-threatening way.

(There is an empty classroom with a table center with three chairs. A board or bulletin board says Happy St. Patrick's Day. Irish girl walks in and sits at the first chair.  She has a "Kiss Me I'm Irish" shirt on and maybe a cute little green hat.  She settles in with her book, notebook and pencil and looks around for cute guys when she is ready for class.  Scottish girl walks in and has a sour look on her face.  She sees Irish girl and gets an annoyed look.  She sits two chairs down from her.  She has on a shirt that says "Don't Kiss Me, I'm Scottish."  After a few moments:)

SCOTTISH
I hate St. Patrick's Day.

(Irish girl looks at Scottish girl surprised)
IRISH
How come?

SCOTTISH
All the stupid shirts, wearing green, the green beer... so disgusting.  It makes a mockery of the true meaning of the holiday.

(Irish girl gets a very confused look on her face)

IRISH
What is the true meaning of St. Patrick's Day?

SCOTTISH
See!

(Irish girl looks around even more confused.  Cute guy walks in and sits between them.  Irish girl is all happy and gives him a big smile and tries to make sure he can see her shirt.  Scottish girl crosses her arms)

GUY
Hey ladies.  How you are you this fine St. Patrick's Day?

(Irish girl giggles and Scottish girl rolls her eyes)

IRISH
I'm Irish.

(She giggles more and he leans in)

GUY
Does that mean I should kiss you?

(She giggles even more.  Guy turns to Scottish girl)

GUY (CONT.)
What's your shirt say?

(Scottish girl puts down her arms)

GUY (Cont.)
Don't kiss me I'm Scottish.  That's funny.

(Guy takes off his glasses, turns up the smolder.  Scottish girl gets nervous)

GUY (CONT.)
So you don't want me to kiss you huh?

(Scottish is nervous and unconvincing)

SCOTTISH
No.

(He leans in more, but then Italian rushes in)

ITALIAN
What are you doing?

(Guy sits up)

GUY
What? Huh? Nothing.

ITALIAN
I saw the way you were looking at her.

GUY
No, I just needed a pencil.

ITALIAN
Get over here...

(She points off left)

ITALIAN (CONT.)
Now!

(Guy jumps up and rushes off with her following.  Irish and Scottish watch off left)

GUY (OFF)
I'm sorry, I'm sorry!

(Irish and Scottish look at each other)

IRISH AND SCOTTISH
Italian.

IRISH
She's definitely Italian.

THE END

Reading Plays Help Reluctant Student Read Aloud - Teaching Tip - Readers Theater

Here is a tip for teachers who have students who struggle with reading...

I find plays help kids with reading aloud in class.  Stronger readers can be given bigger parts and struggling readers can be given smaller parts so they can participate without being overwhelmed and made to feel they can't do as well by having to read the same amount as others.

Comedy plays are even better.  If a reluctant reader has a few short funny lines that get a laugh, this can be a real confidence boost and make them want more.

Here are some fun plays for reading aloud in class:

The Hysterical History of the Trojan War

The Weird, Wild and Wonderful Days of School

Between Good and Evil

JUDE

What have you done?  Why did you stop me?

(Pause)

That's not your choice.  It's mine.

(Pause)

You said you'd fix things.  You said you'd make it better.  When?  I want to know when...  I can't do this much longer.  I'm slowly slipping away.  Can you see what's happening to me?  Can you see how it is all tearing me apart.  I'm in pieces.  It hurts so bad.

(He thinks he sees something watches from the darkness)

JUDE (CONT.)

She was there again wasn't she?  She's always there.  Waiting.

(Pause)

It's too late.  Some things can't be fixed.  Some things need to be thrown away.

(Pause)

Are you doing this for me or for yourself?

(Pause)

There is no us and I don't want there to be a me anymore.

"Fanny" is a monologue for a female actress from the scene "Gossip" in the published play "The Weird, Wild and Wonderful Days of School" by D. M. Larson (ISBN-13: 978-1482739626)

FANNY

News hound? I like the sound of that. The boys at school have always said I've been a dog.

Well, I was walkin' around looking for a story. I went out behind the boys locker room. I always go there hoping to... uh... talk with one of the boys. You know, interview 'em after the big game. And if they ever win a game, I'm gonna get the best darn interview. Losing don't make good news.

Guess what?  I heard some of them boys talking in the locker room. They leave the window open cause it gets real hot in there.  I don't why cause they ain't got nothing on.

(Hands over a report)

Anyway, I got this. Don't know if it's worth printin.'

You think so? Gosh. You're gonna pay me for it too? Wow. A whole dollar! I feel just like Barbara Walters.  I sure look up to her. Her and Jerry Springer.

I will be on the lookout for more stories.  I'm headed over to the boys' swimming hole. They got all kinds of interesting things going on over there.

Here is a good monologue to show range as an actor:

                        EMPTY SPACE
                        by Shiela Larson

(Person gasps as if they just woken up from a deep in a panic)

                              ALEX
                         (Breathing heavy) Where am I?

          (Alex looks around)

(Alex begins to calm down after seeing some people around)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
                    Hey, what is going on?

          (No response)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
Last thing I remember is feeling
the worst pain in the world...

          (Alex looks around looking confused)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
Wait, where am I?  This isn't the
                    hospital.

          (Alex approaches someone)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
Hey can you help me?  Where am I?

          (No response)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
                    Why isn't anyone listening?

          (Alex waves his/her hand)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
Wait...  Can you even see me?

(Alex thinks, then his/her face drops and looks shocked)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
                    Did I die?  I don't remember
                    dying..

                    I don't feel any pain.  I don't
                    feel anything...

(Alex sees him/herself covered under a sheet)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
Hey!  Don't put me under a sheet!
I'm not dead!  Look at me!

(Alex struggles to take the sheet off but can't)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
Please someone...  I don't want to
                    die.

          (Starts to cry)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
I have so much more to do!  This
                    has to be a mistake!

          (Comes to a realization)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
After the accident, everyone said I
would be okay.  The doctor, the
                    nurses, they promised...

          (Begins getting angry)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
You filthy LIARS!  WHY DID YOU LIE
                    TO ME?

(Alex watches them wheel him/her away)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
Oh my God... I really am dead.

          (Alex sees his/her mother)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
Oh mom... Don't cry.  There was
                    nothing you could have done.
Please, I hate to see you cry like
                    that.

(Alex tries to console his/her mom)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
I promise I will try to watch over
you everyday, make sure you don't
                    do anything stupid.

          (Lets out a small chuckle)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
Like when I found your curling iron
on right next to the drapes... lucky
I found it. It was gonna catch on
                    fire pretty quick.

To be honest I'm surprised I'm the
                    one who is dead!

(Laughs some more, then starts to sniffle)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
                    Mom, I'm scared.  I miss you.  I
don't know what to do from here on.

          (Alex starts looking frantically)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
Where did you go?  Mom?  I can't
                    see anything... what is happening
                    to me?

(Alex looks scared then a peace comes over him/her)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
                    Oh... Are you calling me?

          (Alex starts to smile)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
                    You really want me?  After
everything I have done?  Do I
                    deserve it?

          (Looks shy and unsure)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
                    Could you hold my hand?

          (Alex tears up and smiles)

                              ALEX (CONT.)
I guess I won't be so lonely after
                    all.

(Alex takes someone's hand and walks away)

How to Write a Script for a Play Free Writing School for New Writers

$
0
0
Welcome to the Freedrama Free Writing School for New Writers.

This is part 1 of a new series of writing tips.  How this class develops is up to you!

I will be writing a series of quick tips on how to create your own scripts.  I am going to start with the basics and please ask your questions in the comments below.  Your comments will help guide the class and what lessons I teach.  So ask away and I will do my best to help!

QUICK TIP 1

Every script idea starts with three key elements.

1. Setting

2. Characters

3. Plot

These can be developed in any order.  The plot can come first or the characters or the setting.

You can start with the SETTING and decide WHEN and WHERE it takes place.   With a stage play, it's best to pick ONE location.  It's possible to do multiple locations but it makes the play more difficult to produce.  So ideally, select ONE SINGLE location for the setting.

For characters, you will decide WHO is in your story.  Who are the main characters of your story?  Come up with names and personalities for your characters.  The setting or plot may affect the types of characters you select or the characters may affect the setting and plot.

The plot is the why and how of the script.  How does the story start?  Why is the story important?  How will the characters interact?  Why is the setting important?   Use why and how questions to help you develop the plot.

In review, before writing develop the SETTING (when and where), CHARACTERS (who) and PLOT (why and how).

Please post your questions below and stay tuned for Part 2 of the Freedrama Writing School!

(PHIL turns on his web cam and looks very nervous)

PHIL
Hey, there, Sidney.  I'm early.  I mean I'm Phil and I'm early.  I don't know if you're online yet. I hope you don't mind me logging in early because I didn't want to miss you. I didn't want to miss the first time we met... well, I guess it wouldn't be a first time if we never meet.

SIDNEY
(her screen is still blank)
I'm here.

PHIL
Oh, wow. Hi... um. I can't see you.

SIDNEY (OFF)
I'm kind of shy.

PHIL
Me too... painfully shy. I don't know if I could do this in person. That's why I wanted to try online first, because I get so nervous in social situations. It's really hard for me, meeting people.

SIDNEY
Me too.

PHIL
If you think this is a bad idea, I can go... I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. You seem really nice from the emails you sent and I wouldn't want to make a nice person like you feel bad.

SIDNEY
No, it's okay. I'd like to get to know you.

(SIDNEY appears on camera and she is in an old lady mask)

PHIL
Oh... uh... hi.

SIDNEY
Hi.

PHIL
I... uh...

(Phil is weirded out by the mask but tries to think of something to say)

PHIL (CONT.)
Did you get the flowers I sent?

SIDNEY
I did.

(She holds up flowers that are dying)

PHIL
Oh, no. I'm so sorry. I guess mailing them wasn't such a good idea. Delivery is so expensive  though and I thought if I used express mail they'd make it okay.

SIDNEY
It's okay... I like them... I never get flowers. This was nice.

(Sidney puts the flowers to the side of her desk and looks at Phil happily.  After a few moments of silence:)

PHIL
What's with the mask?

SIDNEY
Does it scare you?

PHIL
Not really... it's just... weird.

SIDNEY
So weird you can't talk to me anymore?

PHIL
I have to admit.  I'm a little curious.  Why would you wear an old person mask when you're meeting me for the first time?

SIDNEY
It's my way of weeding out the losers.  I want to find a man who likes what I'm really like and doesn't let my looks get in the way.

PHIL
Tell me about it.

SIDNEY
You're not ugly.

PHIL
I'm not?

SIDNEY
Turn your head that way a bit... no the other way.  Now look right at me.

(Phil does and Sidney takes a very close look)

SIDNEY (CONT.)
You have very nice eyes.

PHIL
Really?  You do too.

SIDNEY
Stop that.

PHIL
What?

SIDNEY
No physical stuff now.

PHIL
But you said my eyes... and your eyes are.. well... pretty...

SINDEY
No.

PHIL
But...

SIDNEY
Shush!

PHIL
Can't I?

SIDNEY
No.

PHIL
Okay.

(Sidney looks very grumpy and crosses her arms.  Phil looks around everywhere but at Sidney.  After a few moments:)

SIDNEY
The flowers are very nice.

PHIL
I like red.  You like red?

SIDNEY
I'm not much into colors.

PHIL
Why is that?

SIDNEY
They're so loaded.  Red is passion. Blue is sadness.  Green is envy.  I don't want colors bossing me around and telling me how I should feel.

PHIL
It's good to feel something though.

SIDNEY
Huh?

PHIL
A least those colors feel something.  Black and white is so boring.  No feeling at all.  Sometimes I feel like I am floating through space, cut off from the world, with no connection to anyone. I long for true blue sadness or some yellow bellied fear just so I could feel a little bit of something to break me out of this fog I've been in so much of my life.

SIDNEY
Seeking a little red in your life too?

(PHIL get embarrassed and shrugs shyly)

PHIL
So... uh... what else happens on these dating chats?  I mean... you seem to have had it all planned out with the mask and such.  It's like a test or something.  That reminds me of this one episode of Star Trek...oh, geez... now I'm talking about Star Trek. You probably think I'm a loser now.

SIDNEY
I like Star Trek...

PHIL
Really?

SIDNEY
Live long and prosper.

(PHIL holds up a cup of tea)

PHIL
Earl Grey tea... hot.

(Sidney laughs and holds up a cup of tea)

SIDNEY
Early grey. My favorite.

(Phil laughs too)

PHIL
What are the odds we'd like the same things?(Sidney wiggles happily)

PHIL (CONT.)
Especially Star Trek... how many women actually like Star Trek?

SIDNEY
I do.

PHIL
So I admitted my secret love of Star Trek?  What's something unusual that you like?

SIDNEY
I collect rainbows.

PHIL
Really?  How do you collect rainbows?

SIDNEY
Through pictures... I have fun finding rainbows and I collect pictures of them. My dream is to travel the world and get a picture of a rainbow on every continent.

PHIL
I love traveling too. And photography.

SIDNEY
Where have you traveled to?

PHIL
Nowhere actually, but I'd love to one day.

SIDNEY
Me too... I've never been anywhere.  I've never even been to Canada.

PHIL
No way, eh?

SIDNEY
Cute... what kind of pictures do you take?

PHIL
Bad ones.

SIDNEY
What kind of pictures do you like to take though?

PHIL
Wildlife.

SIDNEY
That's cool. What's your favorite one so far?

PHIL
The snow leopard.

SIDNEY
Really? I love snow leopards.

PHIL
But it was in the zoo... so it's not that great of a picture.

SIDNEY
Have you gotten any pictures in the wild?

PHIL
Not really... just squirrels and stuff.

SIDNEY
Squirrels are cute.

PHIL
And ducks... I go feed ducks a lot.

SIDNEY
That sounds fun.

PHIL
Maybe we could... go feed ducks some time... or not.

SIDNEY
I'd love to.

PHIL
Maybe I should wear a mask on dates too.  I get so nervous.

SIDNEY
You're doing great.

PHIL
It's the mask.  It's helping me too for some reason.  It's so ridiculous... I guess it lightens the mood.

(Sidney makes a hurt sound)

SIDNEY
Ri-dic, ri-dic... ri-dicles?  Oh... my... I'm ridicles.

PHIL
No, you've very normal.  The rest of us are weird.

SIDNEY
Darn tootin.

(They laugh. Then they both get quiet. Phil looks around nervously and gives a shy smile)

SIDNEY
Wanna see me without my mask?

(Phil pauses.  He looks nervous)

PHIL
Uh... I don't know... maybe... I guess... this is a test too isn't it?  Oh man.

(Sidney laughs)

SIDNEY
Don't be nervous.  I'm not this scary looking for real.

PHIL
Okay.

SIDNEY
I'm kind of ugly but nothing like this.

PHIL
Ugly?

SIDNEY
Don't worry.  I don't have a huge nose or weird teeth or a huge mole on my face.  I'm just not very good looking.

PHIL
I don't mind. I'm no William Shatner.

SIDNEY
You sure?

PHIL
Yes, I'm sure I'm not William Shatner.

(Sidney laughs and Phil joins her)

SIDNEY
You sure about the mask?

PHIL
I'm sure.  I already know you have beautiful eyes.

SIDNEY
Stop that.

PHIL
I still can't compliment you?

SIDNEY
No.

(Sidney sits quietly a moment)

PHIL
You don't have to take off the mask.  It's okay.

SIDNEY
I want to.  You're really nice.  You deserve to see my real face.  You've passed the test.

(Phil waits nervously as Sidney removes the mask.  Sidney looks shy and Phil looks happy)

PHIL
You're beautiful.

(Sidney does an old lady voice)

SIDNEY
No, no, no.

PHIL
You are... really.

SIDNEY
Stop.

PHIL
You don't have any reason to hide.

(Sidney makes eye contact and returns his smile)

Acting Classes vs Degree - Question from New Actors

New actors often ask is it better to take acting classes or get a college degree.

In a perfect world, you do both.  Both have a lot of value.

The key to both is that you want to create a network and make connections.  These connections are critical to finding jobs. In the world of acting, jobs are often found because you know someone.  I got more auditions when I got to know a casting director really well.  It's "who you know" in this industry.

If you only can do one option, I would pick a degree because this will allow you to find more job opportunities in the future.  Acting skills work in a variety of careers.  And having the degree will give you even more opportunities.
