PART 1

(FRANK and RANDY are sitting in a cafe. The cafe has a lot of retro posters of old movie stars and memorabilia. There are other signs such as Free WiFi and “Enjoy free casual office space”.  There can be several people in the cafe already including TASHA [attractive business type] and MARIANNE [shy woman in hoodie and thick glasses listening to something on headphones]. A guy in cow costume, MR. MOO, is in the background.  JENNY is at the counter working as a barista.  TONY enters)

TONY
I had a feeling you would be here.

RANDY
He’s always here now.

TONY
Ever since Jenny got this job.

FRANK
It’s awesome. I can relax and my girlfriend will bring me anything I want.

JENNY
Here is a mocha mint extra sweet for my sweetie.

(JENNY gives FRANK a drink and sneaks a kiss. Then JENNY heads back to work)

RANDY
She has to be nice to everyone. Watch. Hey, Jenny. How about some sugar for my coffee?

(JENNY throws some sugar packets at him)

TONY
Yes, that was the same level of service for sure.

FRANK
So how are you and Jane doing, Tony?

TONY
Awesome… she gave me this amazing back rub last night…

FRANK
Whoa… TMI dude.

(JENNY brings TONY a drink)

JENNY
You should try my back rubs, Frank.

FRANK
Oh, yeah?

JENNY
If you give me some foot rubs tonight, you might find yourself getting some nice rubs in return.

FRANK
Really?

(JENNY hands RANDY a napkin)

JENNY
Yes, here’s some napkins, guys. You’re drooling.

(JENNY goes back to the counter)

TONY
We are lucky guys.

FRANK
I’ve never been happier.

RANDY
Yeah, same with me.

TONY
You’re dating someone?

RANDY
Yeah, she’s was awesomer than your girls. She is rich… and famous… and…

FRANK
Famous? So who is she?

RANDY
Well, not so famous you’d know her.

FRANK
Of course.

RANDY
And she buys me lots of stuff and takes me on cool trips.

FRANK
Where’s all this stuff she’s been buying you?

RANDY
I don’t like to show it off.

TONY
And she’s taking you on trips?  Where did you go?

FRANK
And when did you go?  I have seen you around here an awful lot.

RANDY
I’m not supposed to talk about it. It’s all related to her famous stuff and it’s all very hush hush.

FRANK
Secret famous stuff huh?  Very interesting.

RANDY
She’s so much better than your girls. I’m luckier than the both of you put together.

TONY
You’ll have to bring her by some time to meet us.

RANDY
She’s far too busy for that.

TONY
Okay, whatever.  You ready to go Frank?  You needed a ride right?

FRANK
Yes, let’s go.  See you, Jenny!

(JENNY gives him a little bag and a kiss)

JENNY
There’s a special little something for you in the bag.

FRANK
You’re the best.

JENNY
No, you’re the best.

FRANK
No, you are.

(TONY and FRANK exit)

RANDY
I think I’m going to be sick.

JENNY
Not on my shift, you’re not.

RANDY
Leave me alone, Jenny.  Can’t you see I’m upset?

JENNY
What’s with the big girlfriend lie?

RANDY
I didn’t lie. She’s real.

JENNY
What’s her name?

RANDY
Um…

(sees a Marilyn Monroe poster in the cafe)

Marilyn…

(JENNY looks where he is looking)

JENNY
Marilyn… Monroe?

RANDY
You know her?

JENNY
I’ve heard of her… yes.

RANDY
See… very famous.

JENNY
And very dead.

RANDY
What?  She died… oh, man… my girlfriend is dead. This is terrible. What am I going to do?

JENNY
Get professional help.

(JENNY shoos RANDY away)

(RANDY goes and sits with a tablet/laptop/gaming device)

This is a work in progress using the characters from "My William Shatner Man Crush" (characters I've enjoyed writing before). This script focuses on Randy and a woman who likes him named Marianne. I plan to work on this script some more and I would love your feedback in the comments below each scene. Thank you!

"The Paparazzi Fart" monologue for actors

THE PAPARAZZI FART
by D. M. Larson

Have you ever farted in front of a fan? I call it a paparazzi, because farting in front of a fan is like some terrible stalker that follows you and you can’t escape.

The worst one I’ve ever done was my first. I had the ultimate silent but deadly gas bomb seep from me. I happened to be standing in front of a fan at the time. The results were glorious.

This ultimate gas passing experience was a mix of nerves and a bean burrito, one of those frozen burritos that are made from the cheapest mystery beans ever grown. I wanted to talk to my teacher about something personal and there was only a short time before the whole class would get back from gym. I snuck out early so I could talk to the teacher alone. It was a hot day in May and the teacher had a big fan pointed at the classroom to keep things cool. As I approached, I felt my stomach churn and deposit something painful into my bowels. I bent forward a bit and my teacher looked concerned. I started talking to hide the noise of the gas escaping out of me. At first I was thankful it was silent, but then I realized I was standing in front of the fan and the whole class walked in. The deadliest bottom sewage smell I ever produced oozed from me and filled the air. Students screamed and gasped. Chaos swarmed the room. I looked at the teacher who couldn’t tell what was going on since he was on the other side of the fan. The class struggled into their desks with their noses pinched and mouths moaning.

I don’t even remember what I wanted to talk to my teacher about, but I sure remember that fart. It was glorious.

I dream of being an actor. I want to act and make people happy. My performances will fill people’s hearts with happiness. I will make people laugh and cry, just like the actors in movies.

Movies always brought me comfort over the years. I love watching a great movie where the actors feel like real people. The best actors are the ones that draw me in and I forgot where I am. I love getting lost in the new world they’ve created, which allows me to forget about the problems in life for awhile.

Sometimes, it feels like the whole world is against me and keeping me from my dream. My parents don’t understand why I want to be an actor. They think I’m a silly kid who wants to be some rich and famous movie star.  But acting is not about being popular or wealthy. It’s about doing something I love. There is nothing I’m more passionate about. I feel so lost and empty when I’m not acting. Performing in a play on stage makes me feel alive. I love being a part of a story and becoming a new person. It’s like I’m escaping to some other reality and I go to a magical place where I can be someone else.

Why did you leave me here?! I didn’t ask for this. You drag me on some adventure and then drop me off with no clue how to get back. That’s just great. Wonderful! I’m so glad I was spontaneous and rushed off for something exciting and mysterious.

How could I be so stupid?! I didn’t even know you that well. Sure, you were cute… and fun. And made me laugh. But I didn’t really know anything about you. You offered me something I never had before though… freedom. I was trapped in my life. I didn’t think there was ever a way out.

It’s strange how easily we get trapped in our lives. You get things you want, but then you become a slave to those things, having to make payments, having to keep them repaired, and then paying more money to fix or replace them. Nothing is ever paid for. Or on those rare occasions where you do pay something off, then it breaks soon after, or some new flashy model comes along that you have to have.

I guess that’s what you were. You were some flashy new model that got my attention and offered me something better. But that’s all you were… flash. Flash and no substance. You gave up on me like everyone else. Gave up and left me here… alone… worse off than I started.

Am I worse off though? You did some me some amazing things that I’d never seen before. I did feel more alive than I ever felt before. My old life left me feeling dead. But you made me live… and live well… even if it was for a little while.

There you are! Where have you been?! I thought you left me. This? I was just making recording… it doesn’t matter. What matters is you and me and today. Where are we going next?

School Plays Short Skits and Scripts

Short plays (also known as skits) are an excellent way for new actors start out. Rather than giving them a full play, give them something short to work with and "play" with theatre before jumping into something big. These skits may also be used for Reader's Theatre in the classroom as a quick and easy lesson. Use the short play as an introduction to get students interested in a topic or as a fun way to get students up and moving. Or you can create an entire evening of entertainment in the style of Saturday Night Live by using several sketches (another was of saying a short play or scene). Shorts are a wonderful tool for actors, directors, teacher and students. Check out some of the recommended scripts below or if you want to find a funny skit go to Short Comedy Scripts

surround it.  The owners and workers enjoy this isolation
and the only contact they care to have is when they sell
their pastries.  Lights come up when there is some loud
knocking at the main entrance R.  PARADIEZ enters
sleepily from upstairs doorway UC)

PARADIEZ
I'm coming.  I'm coming.  Quit your knocking.  I hear you.

TAXER
(Calling)
I've been knocking forever.

PARADIEZ
(Opens door)
Not possible.  Forever is a very long time.
(Pulls TAXER in)
Come in.  Come sit down.  Bit early for customers, but no matter.
(Goes for plate of pastries on counter)

TAXER
Well, you see, I'm not...

PARADIEZ
Here is our sampler plate.  These are all of our best pastries.  Enjoy.

TAXER
(Looks at pastries)
I will.  Thank you.

PARADIEZ
So how did you hear about our pastry factory?

TAXER
Well, I...

PARADIEZ
No, let me guess.
(TAXER relaxes)
You heard our ad on the radio?
(TAXER nods while chewing)
Wonderful.  Cousin Clenious was right.  A snappy tune would bring the customers in.  Let's see, how does it go?
(To tune of "Beverly Hillbillies")
"Well, come to our store to get yourself fed;
Our wonderful pastries come in blue, brown, and red..."  Or something like that.  Isn't that clever?

TAXER
Oh, yes.  Quite.

PARADIEZ
I'm so glad we brought him back with us from America.  See, that's where I'm from, if you couldn't tell.

TAXER
Your English is very good.

PARADIEZ
So is yours.

TAXER
I studied in England.

PARADIEZ
So did I.  Wow.  Small world.

TAXER
(Enjoying pastries.  Willing to let PARADIEZ ramble)
Yes.

PARADIEZ
England. That's where I met my wife.  She's from Greece like you.  At first we lived in America but the pastry business wasn't so hot there so we decided to move to my wife's birthplace.  And business has been good, not wonderful, but good.  I worry about my daughter though.  I think she really misses the old US of A.  I think she'd really like to go back again.
(TAXER is eating still)
I'm sorry I must be boring you.  So how do you like our pastries?

TAXER
Incredible.  Never had any like them.

PARADIEZ
(Goes for order pad)
How many can I wrap up for you?

TAXER
(Nervous)
Well, I... didn't come to buy pastries.

PARADIEZ
How's that again?

PARADIEZ
I'm here with a notice from the government.
(Holds out a paper)

PARADIEZ
You mean you sat there the whole time and didn't tell me why you were here?

TAXER
You didn't ask.  And those pastries were quite good....

PARADIEZ
You thief!  Get out!  Now!

TAXER
The government says I can't go until I deliver this letter.

PARADIEZ
Sorry.  I don't want it.

TAXER
What do you mean you don't want it?

PARADIEZ
If it's from the government, I don't want it.  It can't be anything worth hearing.  They never buy my pastries.  They have never had any use for my factory except when they want to tax it.  And I have paid my taxes, so good-bye.
(Proceeds to push him out)

TAXES
(Struggles)
You haven't!

PARADIEZ
(Stops)
Haven't what?

TAXES
(Gives paper)
Paid your taxes.
(Turns to go)
Good-bye.

PARADIEZ
(Reads paper)
What?!!  This can't be!
(Grabs TAXER)
Don't you move from this spot 'til I find out what's going on.

TAXER
It seems pretty clear to me.  You paid the old tax.  There's a new one.  Pay the difference.  Good day.

PARADIEZ

(Picks up a pastry gun)
Freeze, Tax Person.  Don't make another move.  I'm serious here.

TAXER
(Hardly upset)
Look.  I had a job to do.  I did it.  I didn't make the tax, you know.

Free Lesson Plan about Cell Phones Smartphones for Teachers and Students

$
0
0
Smartphones are getting a little out of hand in my opinion. I include myself in this epidemic. I actually got myself a basic flip phone as a way to cut back, because these devices are very addicting.

Here is an idea for a lesson plan about smartphones (cell phones) and this unusual addiction our society is now dealing with:

Materials:

Copies of the play "Cell Phone Zombies"

Free Version:
http://freedramaplays.blogspot.com/2016/04/cell-phone-zombies-free-short-comedy.html

Low Cost PDF:
http://www.currclick.com/product/101003/Cell-Phone-Zombies-short-comedy-skit

Introduction:

Select four students to read the play "Cell Phone Zombies" for the class. This is a humorous way to introduce the topic of smartphone addiction (comedy can be a good way to open students up to discussion).

Discussion:

Ask the class:

"How many have smartphones?"

"How many hours a day do you use the smartphones?"

(extend the lesson by making charts and graphs)

"What are some good things about smartphones?"

"What are some bad things about smartphones?"

Further Reading and Discussion:

Can using a smartphone be dangerous?

http://www.healthline.com/health-news/tech-texting-while-walking-causes-accidents-031014#6

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3310195/Rise-smartphone-injuries-43-people-walked-glued-screen-60-dropped-phone-face-reading.html

Do you feel sidewalk street lights are helping or adding to the problem?

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/infrastructure/a25241/led-sidewalk-lights-pedestrians-smartphone/

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2016/04/25/this-city-embedded-traffic-lights-in-the-sidewalks-so-that-smartphone-users-dont-have-to-look-up/?utm_term=.4a5b2ac24190

Activity:

Select one of the following options -

1) Create costumes and props for the play Cell Phone Zombies and perform for another class

2) Write your own smartphone script and perform for the class. The video can be a commercial PSA discussion the dangers of smartphone use in a funny or serious way.

3) Survey your class and/or other classes about smartphone use and create charts and graphs

Conclusion:

Have students discuss their feelings about smartphone use. Has this lesson changed the way they think about smartphones?

What would they do if they spent one weekend day without using a smartphone? Could they do this? If not, does that mean they are addicted?  (this can lead to an additional lesson or discussion about the meaning of addiction)

But wait... there's more!

If you use this lesson, please comment on how the lesson went, any changes you made and suggestions for improving the lesson.

If you perform "Cell Phone Zombies", please make a video of the performance and share with doug@freedrama.net (remember to hold your smartphone side to side not up and down when making the video). The best video could get featured by Freedrama.net.

Thank you!

"BLOOD TYPE"

From the play "Make Me a Vampire" by D. M. Larson

(LUCIEN is a snooty vampire who can't stand people with certain blood types)

LUCIEN
You're smelling up the entire lobby. Sorry, we don’t deal with your kind. No one does. No one here will be willing to touch someone with your blood type. “B” I assume, by the stench. “B” negative? That’s even worse. “O” is a delicacy that vampires crave the most. “A” is good. A fine blood type we all can enjoy. “AB” is tolerable. It’s mixed with B but A is strong enough to make it drinkable. But “B” - it is the absolute worst. “B” positive is bad enough. It smells like a skunk peeling onions at a sewage processing plant. But “B” negative… It’s a rare and horrific smell… I can’t even imagine what the taste must be. Simply horrendous, I’m sure.

"Don't Pity the Blind Girl"
from the play "Losers in Love" by D. M. Larson ISBN: 9781549653186

(MARIANNE reads something she wrote. She is legally blind so she can read from something on a special reading device or brail printout)

MARIANNE
You say the stupidest things. Sometimes I cry and sometimes I get mad. Sometimes it makes me laugh. But no matter what you say, I always want to hear your voice; Because when you say something good, it’s so very good; When you say something funny, I always smile and feel happy again; And you’re the only guy who doesn’t feel sorry for me; You don’t pity the blind girl, I’m even sure that you know I can’t see; And that’s the nicest feeling, knowing that you don’t care that you see me for something else beside the blind girl. You see me as a woman and I love feeling like a woman with you. I love the way you sniff my hair when you get close...

(She gets worked up and turned on)

“Losers in Love” is a new stage play script by D. M. Larson that is a romantic comedy of sorts featuring the characters of "My William Shatner Man Crush" in a new story focusing on Randy and the woman who loves him named Marianne. The play is a bit more like a series of comedy sketches than a traditional stage script.
