"Mess Things Up" monologue for female from a published play - solo stage play script for woman

$

0
"Mess Things Up" is a monologue adapted from the published play "Flowers in the Desert" ISBN-13: 978-1494806217.  It is written for a teenage female actress and runs about 2-3 minutes.

"MESS THINGS UP"
by D. M. Larson

SAM
Why do I always do this? Why do I always Mess things up.

(Pause)

I get something good then I ruin it.

(Kicks something handy)

I always have to go and spoil things for people. I just try to have a little fun... but... I don't know when to stop. I keep playing... like a little kid who tells a funny joke over and over. They keep saying it 'cause it was funny once so it should be funny a bunch of times. Then when it's not funny any more, they don't know how to quit. They keep trying, hoping it will still be funny. They keep on joking until someone gets mad and... hurts you.

(Pause)

I'm always playing games. I can't stop.

(She has trouble speaking)

I... can't... stop.

(SAM gains control again)

I always hurt someone. My daddy left because of me.

(Sees reaction)

He did. I found a letter he wrote my mama. He said he didn't want to be tied down by a kid.

(Chokes)

Mama said it was for the best.

(Sad)

But I ran Mama off too. She had better things to do than to sit around playing my games.

(Looks at house)

And I'm still playing my little games. I should have listened to you. You got a good head. You stopped playing games when you were two or three I bet. Adults always like you... Me? I get 'em to like to hate me. Get 'em so worked up they want nothing but to have me gone.

You gotta admit, I do it well.

(Sits. Trying to control her crying)

I'm sure you've got better things to do than listen to me.

(SAM looks away)

I wanna be alone okay? Please ... Go. Run far away... Like everyone else.

"Shakespearean Santa" by D. M. Larson
Duologue for 2 Actors

 SANTA
I am Santa who is as merry as the day is long. Friends, Elves, reindeer, lend me your ears: I come to save Christma, not to miss it. A reindeer, a reindeer my kingdom for a reindeer!

 (SANTA looks around)

 SANTA (continued)
Rudolf! Rudolf! Wherefore art thou Rudolf? I am round like the moon and your nose is bright as the sun.

 RUDOLF
To be a reindeer or not to be a reindeer - that is the question.

 SANTA
Is that a red nose I see before me?

(RUDOLF tries to hide his nose)

 RUDOLF
Out out red nose!

 SANTA
Now is the winter of our discontent. Rough winds do shake the darling icicles of December and winter’s lease hath all too long a date. A storm blinds us to the world around us and I have but one wish - for you to guide my sleigh tonight.

RUDOLF
Alas I am but one reindeer.

 SANTA
This is your moment rudolf - there comes a moment in everyone’s lives where they have a chance to make a difference.

 RUDOLF
Alas I am but a freak - a monster! Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor reindeer, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more; it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

 SANTA
This above all: to thine own self be true.

 RUDOLF
What’s in a nose? A nose by any name would smell as well.

SANTA
To thine own self be true.

 RUDOLF
All that glisters is not gold.

 SANTA
You are a reindeer - a special reindeer - We know what we are, but know not what we may be.

RUDOLF
Then why would they not let me play any reindeer games and why would they call me names

SANTA
If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you give us cookies do we not eat?

 RUDOLF
My nose is one that glowed not wisely but too well.

 SANTA
Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. Help us and You will go down in history.

 RUDOLF
Though this be madness, there is method in it.

 SANTA
We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and my tummy is rounded with a snack.

 RUDOLF
Then we shall fly and save Christmas.

(RUDOLF and SANTA do a high five and leave determined)

ISBN-13: 978-1502982308

*The play is free to use in the classroom or workshop. To perform the play, you must request permission from doug@freedrama.net (please include the title "Touched by an Alien" in your request).

EXT. STRANGE PLANET. DAY.

CAST: 4 space explorers and 1+ aliens (any gender) with possible extras by adding more aliens and space explorers

(A couple of space explorers, Captain and Commander, are sitting relaxed among the rocks looking at their electronic devices taking and recording readings.  A couple of other space explorers, Cadet and Grunt, run past behind them yelling/screaming being chased by strange aliens. Captain and Commander look at each other and shrug.  Aliens run back across with Grunt and Cadet chasing them)

CAPTAIN
Care for some tea, Commander?

COMMANDER
Why yes, Captain.  That would be lovely.

(Captain pours Commander some tea.  Alien runs by and knocks it from the Captain's hand and leaves.  Cadet and Grunt chase alien)

CAPTAIN
How rude.

COMMANDER
I vote for sub-intelligent life forms.

CAPTAIN
Noted.  They do appear to be quite savage.

(Grunt and Cadet bring in one of the aliens they've captured)

CADET
Yee-haw! We got one!

GRUNT
On your knees, maggot!

(Grunt forces alien on to its knees in front of the Commander and Captain.  Commander waves a device in front of it)

COMMANDER
Scanning... imaging... OH!

CAPTAIN
What is it?

COMMANDER
Special alert from the Inter-galactic shopping network.  That new phase scanner is 50% off this week.

(Explorers gather around Commander.  Alien sneaks off during following)

CAPTAIN
Buy it!  Buy it!

COMMANDER
I love this new app.  Makes purchasing so much easier.  The deals I'm finding are amazing.

CAPTAIN
Uh... which one of you was watching the alien?

(Cadet and Grunt look at each other.  Grunt punches Cadet)

CADET
Ow!

GRUNT
Get moving!

CADET
I'm an officer.  You're supposed to listen to me.

GRUNT
You're like 12.  How did you get in officer training?

CADET
I was on this colony ship and impressed one of the Space Explorers with my incredible intelligence.

CAPTAIN
And it doesn't hurt that your father is an Admiral.

(Commander laughs)

GRUNT
Move it!

CADET
I'm so reporting you.

(Cadet and Grunt run after alien)

COMMANDER
Commander's vlog... Spacedate Niner-Ought-Ocho-Alpha...

CAPTAIN
You so have something in your teeth.

COMMANDER
Thanks.
Commander uses video screen to check teeth.

CAPTAIN
I think you're still recording.  Streaming live.

COMMANDER
Great.

CAPTAIN
Think we can get those aliens to sign the Galaxy Confederation Charter?

COMMANDER
I have ways of making that happen.

CAPTAIN
Promise me you won't chop off one of their hands again.  That was so gross.

COMMANDER
Worked didn't it?  Hand print signature was a sure thing after that.

CAPTAIN
But you got alien goo all over the WeePad.  It still doesn't work right.

COMMANDER
Fine. Do it the hard way.

(Cadet and Grunt drag in an alien - can be the same or different one)

CAPTAIN
Hello, good alien.  Please sit.

(Grunt forces alien down)

CAPTAIN (CONT.)
Care for some tea?

COMMANDER
This is going to take forever.

GRUNT
Want me to do the hand thing?

(Grunt pulls out a huge knife and holds up alien's hand)

COMMANDER
The captain here doesn't like that.

CADET
That's against our Galactic Confederation Code!

(Grunt laughs and puts knife away)

GRUNT
We're a long way from the GCC, Cadet.

(Cadet points proudly to a badge on uniform)

CADET
Where-ever you see this badge, the GCC is the law and I shall...

(Grunt grabs the badge off Cadet's uniform and tosses it away as far as possible)

CADET (CONT.)
Hey!

(Cadet goes after it)

CAPTAIN
So, my friend.  What kind of tea do you like?  I can generate any number of flavors.

GRUNT
Make it extra hot.

CAPTAIN
No torture.

GRUNT
Commander?

COMMANDER
Listen to the Captain.

GRUNT
I'm so transferring after this mission.

CAPTAIN
So savage.  I know none of this means anything to you but I simply need your handprint.  It says you agree to the GCC and your planet and all the resources here will belong to us.  In return, we give you this shiny new GCC badge!  Each one is uniquely engraved with an unduplicated number and a holographic image of our supreme leader.

(Captain holds out badge to alien)

CAPTAIN (CONT.)
It's shiney.

(Alien slowly takes and looks at it)

CAPTAIN (CONT.)
Pretty.

(Alien throws it at Captain)

CAPTAIN (CONT.)
My eye!  It hit me in the eye!

(Grunt is laughing.  Commander grabs the alien's hand and sticks its hand print on to the WeePad)

COMMANDER
Done.  Let it go.

GRUNT
No souvenirs?

COMMANDER
Gross.  No.

(Grunt let's go of alien but it doesn't run.  Alien goes up to Captain who is still crumbled over.  It touches the Captain's wound.  Captain flinches.  The alien spits on it's own hand and then touches the hand to the Captain's eye)

CAPTAIN
Hey!  Oh... that feels good.

(Alien pulls away and Captain's eye is okay.  Captain looks in amazement)

CAPTAIN (CONT.)
Thank you.

(Alien walks away)

COMMANDER
That was different.

CAPTAIN
Quite.

COMMANDER
I think your eye is a slightly different color now.

CAPTAIN
I can see better too.

COMMANDER
This requires further study.

CAPTAIN
We'll report to the GCC and get authorized for a return voyage.

COMMANDER
To the shuttle?

CAPTAIN
To the shuttle.

GRUNT
Totally asking for a transfer.  I didn't get to kill anything.

(They exit and a rocket blast is heard.  After a few moments Cadet returns)

CADET
Where did everybody go?

Part 1 Free Acting School from Freedrama.net - 2016 Online Help for Actors

Welcome to the Freedrama.net Free Acting School.

Students will complete the class will receive a certificate, get feedback on their acting from Emmy Award winner Doug Larson and learn to be a performer for our Freedrama YouTube page.

Free Acting School online

So you would like to be an actor?

The first step is to figure out why you want to be one. Ask yourself, "Why do I want to be an actor?"

If you want to be rich and famous, that can be a long and difficult road that requires a lot of luck.

But if you want to be an actor because it is fun or it brings you joy or you like entertaining others, then this could be the right choice for you.

Decide why you want to act, figure out why it is important to you and what kind of actor you want to be.

STEP ONE: KEEP A JOURNAL (POST BELOW)

To get a certificate of completion for this class you must complete all 10 class discussions and create 2 videos of your acting.  (If you're unable to do a video, then there is an audio option).

Day 1 question: "Why do you want to be an actor?"
(post your answer in the blog comments below)

You must post your answer to the question above in the blog comments and then respond to another actor's post in this course.  Give words of encouragement. Share your experiences. Or discuss acting.  Your interactions MUST be positive or you will be disqualified from taking the class and will NOT be considered as a monologue performer for our YouTube page. You will hear from your instructor (Emmy Award winner Doug Larson) when you complete your two video monologues for this course (see later lessons).

FINAL EXAM (explained in later lessons in the course):

You will also need to complete two recordings of yourself acting (audio or video) and make changes to each after getting suggestions from your instructor. You want these to be contrasting monologues - one drama and one comedy - in order to show your range.  This will be discussed more later in the class.

After you post your journal below, go to Day 2 of the acting school:
http://freedramaplays.blogspot.com/2016/01/part-2-freedramanet-free-acting-school.html

Be nice! Don't act like a pirate in these discussions.

ACTING TIP FROM MERYL STREEP: "Acting is not about being someone different. It's finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there."

Part 2 of the Freedrama.net Free Acting School

Before looking at your own acting, look at other people's acting. If you are not able to attend a performance on stage, then you can watch movies. Your first homework assignment is to go see a play or watch a movie.

What makes a great actor Free Acting School Part 2

When picking a movie to watch, think about a movie that had a major impact on you. What is your favorite movie and why? Is it the actors? Is there an actor in your favorite movie that you think is very good?

Watch a movie or see a play and pick an actor who you think was really good. What actor did you believe was "real"? Sometimes famous actors aren't the best actors. Was there an actor who was better than the well known person? Was there an actor who made you believe that they were really that character? Or was there an actor who totally changed who they were for the role and were different than you've ever seen them before?

Write in your journal about the actor you watched. Did they become the character? Why was their performance good? What made them better than other actors? Or did all the actors work together and perform as a team? Post your journal in the blog comments below.

NOTE: You must then respond to another actor in this class. Your interactions MUST be positive or you will be disqualified from getting a certificate in the class and getting feedback on your acting from Emmy Award winner Doug Larson.

You will now select two monologues that you will perform for the end of this class.

The monologues must be from this link:

http://www.freedrama.net/small1a.html

Select two contrasting monologues - two that are very different from each other - one comedy, one dramatic - or two with very different characters.  For example, the character in one monologue is good, kind and innocent and the character in the other one is evil or angry or upset.

Post the names of two monologues you like the best. Answer the following questions about these two monologues:

Why do you like the monologues?

Who is the main character of each monologue?

What is the character like?

Where is the character (the setting/place it is taking place)?

Why is the character saying what they are saying in the monologue?  (What's their motivation?)

How did the character get to the point they are now? (what is their background? where did they come from? why are they behaving the way they do?)

Is the monologue from a play? If so, read the play and write about what you learned about the character from the play.

Post in the comments below your answers to the questions above.

Free Acting School from D. M. Larson - Part 7 of the Freedrama.net Free Acting School

Now it is time to prepare yourself to act. After you selected two monologues to perform on camera from this link http://www.freedrama.net/small1a.net then answer the following questions in the blog comments below.

Which character in the monologues is most like you?

What character is most like you Free Acting School Part 4

When you pick a character, ask yourself the following:

What do you like about the character?

What is similar between you and that character?

Do you know someone else who is like the character?

Do you have a personal experience that helps you understand this character?

Think about why the character is the way he/she is. What made them the way they are? Make up a "back story" or history of the character. Where did they come from? What do they like and dislike? How old are they? What do they dress like?

I once heard an actor say they always decide what that character might have for breakfast and that helps them figure the character out.

There are no wrong answers. The important thing is to learn as much as possible about the character before performing the character.

Post in the comments below your answers to the questions above.

You must then respond to another actor in the blog discussion below.  Your interactions MUST be positive :)***

You will now memorize and practice your two monologues.  Here are some tips on preparing.

After you practice and memorize the monologue, you can act it for friends or family or video yourself doing it and watch it on your own for ideas to improve. If a part is boring or hard to watch, then think of ways to make that part more interesting. Do the monologue over until you feel like you'd be proud to show someone else. When you do show your video monologue to someone else (or even a small group of family and friends), watch how they react rather than watching the video with them. Are there parts that they have good reactions to? Make a note of the good parts and then think of ways to improve the other parts.

Question from new actor 1: Do actors feel emotions when they act or just pretend? For example, if they are meant to appear sad and possibly cry, do they internally make themselves sad like their character (by pretending to be that character) or do they just fake what it is supposed to look like?

Answer: There are two different types of actors: method and technical. Technical have techniques for showing emotions but don't really feel them. Method actors actually feel the part and become the character in their own minds. Method actors do some amazing performances but can be overwhelmed by the parts (i. e. Heath Ledger). Technical actors can be good and popular as well (i. e. Harrison Ford) but they often seem like they are always the same person in many roles.

Question from new actor 2: "How to work on facial expression for acting? i cant convey my emotions when i act. do you have any tips and examples for each emotions like sad, frightened, nervous, etc. is squinting a bad thing. how do i move my eyebrows downward"

Answer: Rather than trying to create the emotions on your face, work on feeling the emotions. Pick something that makes you feel a certain way (scared) and try to really feel that way.

Here is a great monologue with a variety of emotions: http://freedramaplays.blogspot.com/2014/12/advice-on-performing-monologue-breaking.html

Try to think of times in your own life where you have felt like the character and then remember these emotions while doing the monologue. Record yourself and forget about the camera while you do it. Focus on the emotions and really feeling them.

Question from new actor 3: Any tips on voice enunciation because I sound the same throughout the recording?

Answer: First, when you go through a script, think of different emotions the character might be feeling.

In this monologue: http://freedrama.net/protecto.html At first he is excited, then in the middle he is sad or worried. Then he starts to get excited again, but then at the end he is confused and disappointed. You'd want to reflect that in your voice and acting. Show each of those emotions for each part.

Next, look at each sentence. Pick out a word or two in each sentence that you'd want to put the most emphasis on. In the line "I've always dreamed of being a hero." You might pick "dreamed" or "hero" or both to the be the words you say a little more clearly or forcefully.

Memorizing lines:
A quick way to learn lines is to record all the lines and play them back and say them along with the recording. You can record with your computer, phone, etc. Play it over and over and say your lines along with the recording. Then when you know it better, pause the recording after each line and try to say your line. Listen to the line and see if you got it right and try again.

Other ways that people learn lines include reading the script and covering your lines up. Read the line before and then try to say your line while it is covered up. Another common way is to have someone read the cue lines and you try to say them. I have even seen people type all their lines as a way to memorize. Look at the previous line and then try typing your next line without looking at the script. Everyone memorizes differently so it is good to try different techniques to see what works best.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Post what tips worked the best for preparing your monologue and any questions you have.

You must then respond to another actor in this discussion.  Give words of encouragement. Share your experiences. Or discuss acting.  Your interactions MUST be positive or you will be disqualified from taking the class and you will NOT be considered for a paid position as an online monologue performer for Freedrama.
