WORDS FOR PEACE
a poem
by D. M. Larson

Words are precious nourishment for my soul
Conserving wise words, which will make me whole
An internal fortress keeps me alive
In silent sanctuary, I survive

Survive the hidden anguish of harsh words
Under siege by slander I often heard
Angry words echo, driving me insane
Leaving me in agony from the pain

Pain haunting the recesses of my soul
A hazardous quest transforming me whole
And quench my craving for affirmation
Apparitions of imagination

Imagination will help reassure
Hoping companions will help me endure
I covet kind words that provide release
Restoring a most precious inner peace

PART 2

(DUNLAP enters and sees RANDY)

DUNLAP
Randy? Is that you?

RANDY
Dunlap! How are you? It’s been forever.

DUNLAP
Not possible. You’re not immortal.

RANDY
Not yet.

DUNLAP
Come on, RANDY. You know no vampire in their right mind would make you one of us. No one can stomach your blood.

RANDY
Please, Dunlap. We used to be such good friends. Couldn’t you do this for me?

DUNLAP
Me? No, even if you didn’t have “B” blood, I couldn’t convert a friend. It’s too weird. Very ackward.

RANDY
You owe me, Dunlap. You remember that time in school when you cheated on a math test?

DUNLAP
You had to bring that up, didn’t you?

RANDY
You copied me because you wouldn’t be able to play sports with a failing grade. And when we got caught, you would have been thrown off the team all together for cheating. But I took the heat for you. I said it was all me. Now, it’s payback time. You are going to make me a vampire!

DUNLAP
Do you realize how horrible it is to make me do something like this?  This is way worse than getting expelled from school.

RANDY
Helping a friend is worse?

DUNLAP
Stop twisting things around.

RANDY
Try to see it from my point of view. I’m one of the last living humans on Earth. There were not that many people with “B” blood to begin with and we’re getting older. Some have died off naturally. And frankly, the other humans don’t like me very much. They say I’m annoying.

DUNLAP
Even the “B’s” shun you?

RANDY
I’m all alone. No one wants anything to do with me.

DUNLAP
Fine, I’ll do it.

RANDY
Really? This means so much to me.

DUNLAP
I guess I’ll be one of those rare vampires who actually knows what “B” blood tastes like. Maybe I could get some special recognition for this and do a lecture tour of something. At the very least, I should do a video… it will go viral.

RANDY
Fine, fine. Whatever it takes. Anything.

DUNLAP
Hey, Ambrose. Come here.

(AMBROSE is at the edge of the stage and shakes his head no)

DUNLAP (CONT.)
Get over here. Don’t be afraid. He doesn’t bite.

(AMBROSE still shakes his head no)

RANDY
Not yet.

(DUNLAP gets him and hands him his phone)

DUNLAP
I want you to record this on FangFace Live.

(AMBROSE takes the camera in one hand but plugs nose with the other hand)

DUNLAP (CONT.)
I’m going to be the first vampire in a long time to try and drink “B” blood.

RANDY
So which side of my neck do you want?

DUNLAP
We’re just friends. I prefer the wrist.

(RANDY holds out arm. DUNLAP tries to prepare himself mentally)

DUNLAP
Here goes. Drinking the blood of a “B.”

(RANDY is still holding out his arm. DUNLAP tries to move closer but his face scrunches up at the terrible smell)

DUNLAP (CONT.)
The smell is making my eyes water.  I’ve never been this close to a “B” since I’ve been a vampire. Oh, man. This is too much.

(DUNLAP is getting very sick. RANDY puts his arm in DUNLAP’s hands and lifts it to his face)

RANDY
Do it! Please!

(DUNLAP opens his mouth. AMBROSE faints and falls to the floor. Then DUNLAP coughs and throws his hand over his mouth and runs off stage)

RANDY (CONT.)
So close. I wonder if there is a vampire out there without a sense of smell?

(RANDY exits as lights fade to black)

“MAKE ME A VAMPIRE”
By
D. M. Larson

(4 actors any gender)

PART 1

(Lights come up on the Office of Vampire Venture Inc., an office of vampires in a world that is controlled by them. AMBROSE sits at the front entrance of the office building serving as a greeter. Various vampires come and go. AMBROSE acknowledges them each with a friendly and wave of the hand. Suddenly, AMBROSE smells something terrible and walks around for a better look. A human named RANDY enters. The smell gets worse and AMBROSE realizes it is RANDY and stops him)

AMBROSE
May I help you?

RANDY
I know you guys at Vampire Venture Inc. were the best of the best when it came to hunting down humans. I bet your group converting half of humanity to being vampires.

AMBROSE
We successfully transformed 51.9% of humanity into vampires.

RANDY
Slightly more than half. Most impressive.

AMBROSE
Sir, I’m afraid, I must ask you to leave. This is no place for humans… of your type.

RANDY
My type? Oh! That’s why I’m here. I know that normally you vamps avoid my kind, but I really want to become a vampire.

AMBROSE
You WANT to become one?

RANDY
It’s getting pretty lonely with most of humanity being undead. And once people are one of you, then they want nothing to do with me.

AMBROSE
It’s the smell. It’s… unbearable.

(LUCIEN enters)

LUCIEN
Ambrose, what is that terrible smell?

AMBROSE
Our visitor. I’m attempting to remove him.

LUCIEN
Do so, post haste. He’s smelling up the entire lobby.

(LUCIEN starts to go but RANDY follows. AMBROSE looks very sick and exits)

RANDY
Please, wait. I need your help. I want to become a vampire.

(LUCIEN sniffs)

LUCIEN
Sorry, we don’t deal with your kind. No one does.

RANDY
There must be someone willing to convert me. It’s that what your entire organization is built on. You’re the best.

LUCIEN
No one here will be willing to touch someone with your blood type. “B” I assume, by the stench.

RANDY
“B” negative.

LUCIEN
That’s even worse. “O” is a delicacy that vampires crave the most. “A” is good. A fine blood type we all can enjoy. “AB” is tolerable. It’s mixed with B but A is strong enough to make it drinkable. But “B” - it is the absolute worst. “B” positive is bad enough. It smells like a skunk peeling onions at a sewage processing plant. But “B” negative… It’s a rare and horrific smell… I can’t even imagine what the taste must be. Simply horrendous, I’m sure.

RANDY
But there has to be someone who can help me. Maybe you have a new recruit you could force to do it, or maybe there’s some initiation you want to do that involves drinking the worse blood ever, or maybe you do a new reality tv show and one of the horrible tasks they have to perform, or drinking my blood could be a practical joke…

LUCIEN
A joke on someone I despise.

RANDY
Exactly!

LUCIEN
There is no one I dislike that much. Please vacate the premises or I will have you forcibly removed.

(LUCIEN snaps his fingers and AMBROSE returns and goes up to RANDY to grab him, but looks sick again and has to run off. LUCIEN starts to leave)

RANDY
Please, I don’t want to be alone anymore. I want to be a part of society again. Let me live forever like the rest of you.

(RANDY grabs him and LUCIEN looks ill and exits)

RANDY (CONT.)
I’m not leaving until someone turns me into a bloodsucker!

I am sick of living in a cube! Why do I come here day after day? I don’t even see the point to what I’m doing. I spend each day getting pushed around by all of you. And all of you are getting pushed around by someone else. Do we even know why? Do we even care?

As long as we get our paychecks, and as long as we get our vacation days, and our sick days, that’s all that really matters. Oh, and our retirement, which may not be there when we get old, and our medical insurance we can’t even use, because we can afford the bills it won’t pay.

This is insane. Being here is an act of insanity. Day after day, doomed to repeat ourselves. Do we ever move forward? Do we ever make any progress? Does anyone really care what we do here? I know I don’t.

I don’t care anymore. I’m done. I’m tired of putting my life on hold hoping for something they may never happen. And who knows if I can enjoy life later anyway? What if I’m sick? What if get hurt? And I would look back at this time in my life and see this. This emptiness. This dead end. This abyss. So I’m giving my two weeks notice!

I don’t have a weapon. I’m unarmed. Put your gun away. I’m listening, okay? I’ll do whatever you want. Here’s my wallet. Is that what you want? Take it. Take it!

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell. I’ve never had this happen before. I’ve never had a gun pointed at me. I didn’t know what it was like.

I thought I could handle something like this. I thought I was brave, but… I know I’m not.

“Don’t be a hero,” must be my motto. You hear that and think… but maybe I would be. Maybe I could face danger and stand up and do something no one else would do.

I won’t. No, no. Don’t worry. I won’t. I’m not a hero. I’ll do whatever say. Just, please, don’t shoot me.

Why is everyone laughing? I don’t understand. What’s so funny?

Stop laughing, please!

Screams of laughter! It’s like you’re all screaming at me. You’re hurting my ears.

It’s not funny. Please stop. Please stop hurting me.

It’s only funny if we all understand the joke.  Except nothing is funny to me anymore. I can’t remember the last time I smiled. Maybe a forced smile or two, but no natural, sneak up on your face, smiles.

The last time I smiled was when I heard a little girl giggling at a picture in a book. She’d turn the page and laugh. She’d turn to the next page and then she’d turn back to the picture again, and giggle the cutest little giggle.

Who was that little girl? I don’t remember who she is.

Our affections bought and sold on the black market of politics. Duped and dumbfounded, we feed on the news, stuffed on nuggets of nothing. Empty calories of hopes crammed down our throats, and somehow, we believe it will be different this time. Maybe this time, this one is for real. We can believe in this one, this time. But our dreams are tricked and traded in some back alley deal. Our knight in shining armor rides off with his helmet full of gold, where retires on the lakeside, ignoring the promises sinking in the quicksand before him. His carefree smile shines over our sadness.

Everything is some planned pageant, paraded before us, allowing us to participate by casting our cares into the ballot box, where they are lost forever in the endless void of politics.

I often wonder why some countries around the world hate my country so much. I’m not even sure what we’re doing wrong. And that’s the problem. I have no clue what my country is doing. What has my country done to make people so angry?

I know the arguments. If we take care of problems in other countries, then we won’t have problems here. That’s kind of true, but is it the right thing to do? If I burn down my annoying neighbor’s house, I don’t have to worry about him playing his music too loud or having his dog poop on my lawn. But I destroyed his home in the process. I might have even killed someone. And I made all the other neighbors anxious and nervous. Is that the kind of neighborhood I want?

At some point, someone needs to take a step back and say, if I do this now, will it create more problems later. I might stop a problem now, but am I make a worse problem later. If I fight the parents, do I teach their children to hate me? Whatever happened to love your enemies? Nothing. That’s the problem. I’m not sure anyone has loved their enemies yet. I wonder what would happen if we started? Maybe if we’re kinder to our enemies, we won’t have so many enemies anymore.

There are too many difficult choices in life. I’ve given up changing the world. I spent too many days barking up those trees. Now, I’m content to pay the bills and care for my family. But part of me still cares deeply for those causes I cried about in my youth. My heart still bleeds a little when there is an attack on my young values.

Can I work somewhere that does war with the ideals I once held dear? They destroy the very life I cherish, and claim they do no wrong. They show no regrets. They justify what they do. I try to ignore it. I know I shouldn’t. I know I should take a stand. But somehow the fight is all gone.

What happened to me? When did I become all about numbers? Somehow my soul turned digital... mechanical… unfeeling... and cold.

Never meet your heroes. Heroes are more of an idea than a fact. We believe in them, but they do not believe in themselves. They are flawed, imperfect and damaged like the rest of us. Their greatness grows in our minds and evolves into a myth that we recite over and over until we believe it without question.

The best heroes are the dead ones. They never disappoint us. We can believe all we want about them and it’s less likely that we’ll learn the truth. Their glorious stories begin to cement in our minds and the darkness of their lives fade into the dawn of our expectations. Heroes are never born; we create them. They spring from our minds and are given power by our imaginations.

A living hero will never be what we need, never good enough. That’s why you must die.

You found me, cast aside, lost and broken. You searched through the rubble to find the severed pieces of my life, and slowly fit them back together again.

Before you, I felt like I was dying. The panic consumed me and squeezed the life from my heart. But I didn’t care. When we are weighed down by the torture of hate, we don’t fear death. There was nothing to live for… until I met you.

You rebuilt me and fixed what was broken. You made me better and pieced me back together in new ways that improved me. With the right parts, I was reborn... and life felt real... and right for the first time.

I struggle to feel in control of my life. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one not in control. Everyone else seems to have a say in what I do, how I act, where I go, who I see... why I exist. I’m the one who needs to decide why… why I continue to follow the herd… why I don’t break away and go my own way.

One day, I’m going to say no. It’s getting harder and harder to say yes to everyone. I’m pushed and pulled in so many directions that one day I’m going to break. I’ll break into a million pieces and they’ll cast me aside as useless. I’m tossed to the beasts as scraps where they strip away every last bit of usefulness. Then, and only then, after there is nothing left of my past, nothing more they can take from me... maybe I’ll be able to be me again.

First the arcades. Now the video stores. Everything I love is closing. The mall is next. Nothing will be left for those of us who like to see the light of day. The internet is killing everything I love. I loved arcades. I loved seeing how long I could make a quarter last.

(Laughs)

Who even carries quarters anymore? I used to carry a million of them in my pockets. I’d jingle when I walked. I’d check the pay-phones for forgotten coins… even the pay-phones are gone! This isn’t my world anymore. It’s been destroyed by data clouds and bit streaming. Nothing is real. I just want to touch something and share it with people around me. I want to see someone’s face when I talk to them, look them in the eye and know who they really are. I want to people to show some respect to each other. When you have to say something face to face, you’re kinder and more careful. But now, we’re alone, cut off from each other, casting insults and huddling in our caves, fearing the unknown.

Much of my life, I was hurting. I took so many wrong paths, and became a wanderer in the dark forests of my soul. A labyrinth of never ending disappointments plagued my life. Success was empty and meaningless. I reached for the wrong fruit and was poisoned at the river’s edge. Yet, I kept drinking and filling my life with blackness.

But you found me in the woods and offered me a way out. You took me to the mountain and showed me there was so much I was missing. I could see the new kingdom you offered me, modest, untouched by the darkness. A small paradise, with a simple shelter to keep us warm, a warmth I never felt before. A warmth I never found until I met you.

I never thought we’d have to use the bunker. I thought you were crazy for keeping one. But you kept the food fresh and checked the supplies and made us do drills. And here we are… using it. It’s actually happening. The world has gone nuclear and we might be all that is left. I mean, who has shelters like this anymore? No one thinks this is going to happen. No one thinks any leader is crazy enough to pull the trigger. But someone was crazy enough to do it and lost control. They lost control of everything. Egos with an extra helping of madness. Their pride trumps logic. It’s not about good vs. evil. It’s about who has the bigger bomb. But when everyone has a bigger bomb, then what’s left? Only us?

I don’t know if I want to be left here alone, with no one else. There won’t be much of a world left for us anymore.

I am sorry I was so hard on you. I was a real jerk about this. It turns out you’re not the crazy one. You’re the only sane one left.

Listen to the madness. Listen to a world gone mad.

Nothing good comes from the southside. We’re born bad and everyone here tries to keep it that way. But for some reason, I pray. I pray for a better day. A day when we don’t have to beg or steal our meal. I want us to earn what we need and deserve it. I’m tired of the whining and crying. I will lift myself up and make it better.

I go to church, and hide in the back in my hoodie, hoping no one will recognize me. Nobody here but the oldies and the goodies anyway. I listen, hoping to understand something the priest says. It’s mostly alien to me. My family never went to church much. Just Easter and Christmas, at least until mama died. Then nobody cared anymore after that. Nobody but me.

I want something different now. I want something better. Let me unlock the key to a new life. A life that’s not wasted. I don’t want to waste away here like everyone else. Make me better. Make me matter. Let me make a difference.
