You know what. I'm not sure this is working out for us.

No, don't say anything. I know you're upset, but I need to get this off my chest.  I don't think we're right for each other. Sure, you have money and a cool car, but that's it. There's nothing more to you. And I just don't think I can be with someone so superficial anymore.

I need a guy who thinks more about what I want. You're so caught up in sunsets and books and poetry. I need someone who is caught up in me. I should feel important. What I want should be important to you. So that's why I'm leaving you... Leaving you and that wonderful car of yours. And all that money...

No, please don't tempt me any longer with your materialism. I need to be free. Free to be with someone puts me first and gives me my heart's desire. Goodbye, Phil.

You know what Phil? Maybe I was a little hard on you... you...

(RHONDA sees PHIL on top JULIANA)

RHONDA (CONT.)
What's this?! You're with another woman? I'm gone like 5 seconds and you replaced me? Don't play possum with me. I know you two are just pretending to be passed out… trying sleeping through this.

(RHONDA kicks PHIL)

RHONDA (CONT.)
How you like that! Huh, Phil?

(She gets worried all the sudden and gasps)

RHONDA (CONT.)
Phil? Is that blood?  Oh no - what am I going to do? I can't have anyone find me with another dead body. What should I do? I'll put them in his car and let it roll off the cliff... that will work... make it look like an accident. No one has to know.

(RHONDA tries to pick up JULIANA)

RHONDA (CONT.)
Wow, this girl is heavy.

Everyone needs to share more. I think I had sharing beaten out of me at an early age. We used to play Monopoly as kids and it brought out the worst in me. I had this terrible desire come over me to win it all and be in total control of the board. I wanted all the money and loved crushing my competition. But all of my brothers and sisters were that way too.  We had so many fights over that game that my dad finally set the board on fire. He tossed it in the fireplace along with all the money. All we had left were the little homes and hotels.

Okay, I have another compliment for you. The reason I gave you that magic coin is because of all the things you could wish for in this world, you wanted to help those people out there. And I really believe you would help them. So many people say that stuff because they think they have to. They dream of cars and vacations. Then they throw in helping the homeless as an afterthought. But you thought of others right away. And I see you do nice things around the diner all the time. I think your boss knows about the nice things you do. The extra food for people short on money. The little treats for the kids. Little things like remembering people’s names and listening to them talk. All that makes this a great diner and keeps people like me coming back for more.. And that’s what everyone needs to do. Make their little corner of the world a better place. If we all did that, then things would change for the better.

"The Killing Joke"

THE KILLING JOKE
It’s so hard to be funny. I can’t even tell jokes right. When I hear something funny, I try to remember it, but then it comes out wrong. There’s nothing better than making people laugh. Laughter really is the best medicine. A good joke can change a sad, dark or tense moment into a tolerable one. Something funny can turn my day around. I want to do that for other people too.

And on those rare occasion where I am funny, I ruin it somehow. I don’t know when to stop. I can’t let a joke linger and spread it’s good will. I have to shovel it deep and spread it like manure. If it’s funny once, it will be funny over and over again right? Wrong. But I never learn. I’m the joke killer. That should be my superpower… joke killing. Don’t let me near something funny, okay? You don’t want humor to fall into the wrong hands. These hands will use and abuse it.

I saw it! A ghost! Upstairs! I did. It was floating around all spooky like. I think it touched me. I got all cold and shivery. I wanted to scream but when I opened my mouth all I could manage was a little squeak. I was frozen with fear. I thought it was gonna eat my brains or something. Oh, wait. That’s zombies, ain’t it? Well, it was gonna do whatever ghosts do to me. I could feel it doing something… something real creepy like. You wanna go see it? Or are you too scared? You ain’t as brave as me.

(Looks down)

Hey! No, I did not! I spilled a drink on myself, okay? I am not a liar! You go up there and see for yourself. Up there is an honest to goodness, real scary, ghost. I may have lived to tell about it. Will you?!

In weakness, we find strength. The walls must crumble before we advance. The darkness finds us before we seek out the light.

True strength comes from loss. The only reason I know a good life now, is from the pain of my past. I was ruined from within and stripped to my final shreds of life. But I was given a second chance to live again, to rise up and be reborn. Burned pure by the fire, I rise on the wings of my second soul.

Watching the world from above, floating above the clouds
Billions of voices are merely whispers now
Everything is so small, problems too far away to see
Peaceful and silent in the nothingness of space
Spinning, spinning, lost in the clouds
The details of life, forgotten and turning away
Turning a blind eye to the worries of the world
Floating calming above the storm

RANDY
Where’s the line to see Wonder Woman?

MARIANNE
Linda Carter or Gal Gadot?

RANDY
They’re both here?!

MARIANNE
Amazing, isn’t it? This has to be the best WonderRificCon ever!

RANDY
Totally. Linda Carter was like the first Wonder Woman, right?

MARIANNE
Many actresses have played Wonder Woman. Lucy Lawless has been her too.

RANDY
The chick who played Xena Warrior Princess?

MARIANNE
The same.

RANDY
Wow, she gets all the cool parts. So, which line is this? Old or new Wonder Woman?

MARIANNE
Don’t call Linda Carter old. That’s not polite.

RANDY
How about spinning Wonder Woman or sword Wonder Woman?

MARIANNE
Better. What was the question again?

RANDY
I don’t remember.

(They laugh)

MARIANNE
Oh, thats right. You asked which line is this? It’s to meet both. I bought the super deluxe wonder pack. I get to meet them both, get their autographs and get a picture with them. It wasn’t cheap. Quite expensive actually. That must be why I’m the only one in the line.

RALPH
You rich or something?

MARIANNE
No, not at all,  I’ve been saving for this ever since I found out. I gave up my cable and my smartphone. And cut back on eating out. Well, I cut out most food in general. Ramen noodles are good and cheap. I found all kinds of way to cook them. All the sacrifices are worth it. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. They’re my heroes.

RALPH
Wonder Woman isn’t real, you know?

MARIANNE
She’s real to me.

(MARIANNE is very forceful about this and pouts. RANDY looks around a minute before asking:)

RALPH
How long have you been waiting?

(RANDY notices her sleeping bag)

MARIANNE
I’ve been waiting here for two days. I’m first in line too!

RANDY
It must be a pretty expensive line if you’re the only one.

MARIANNE
It shows I’m the most dedicated fan of all. I’m their biggest fan!

RANDY
Isn’t that a quote from a horror movie?

MARIANNE
Maybe.

RANDY
You’re scaring me.

MARIANNE
You have nothing to fear. Wonder Woman is here.

RANDY
Where?

MARIANNE
In the building somewhere. Two of them actually. I wonder what’s going on? It seems like hardly anyone is here now.

RANDY
I think everyone went to the other building for something.

MARIANNE
There’s another building at the convention center?

RANDY
I came over here because I hate crowds.

MARIANNE
They told me this was line. Do you think they told me the wrong place?

RANDY
Who did you talk to?

MARIANNE
She sounded like she thought she was important. I think she said her name was Ashley. Her clothes were very sparkly.

RANDY
That’s our state beauty queen pageant winner Ashley Addams. Miss Walla Walla Washington. She thinks she going to be the next Miss America.

MARIANNE
Why is she here?

RANDY
Doing a comic book store promo for her cousin or something as a favor. My theory is that she has to do community service for some crime she’s committed.

MARIANNE
Please tell me she told me the right place to go.

RANDY
Judging by the way she is pointing over here at you and laughing with her friends… maybe not.

MARIANNE
This is terrible! Why would she do this to me?

RANDY
Because she’s a jerk. She thinks she’s better than everyone else and tries to make sure us pee-ons know it.

MARIANNE
What am I going to do? What if I missed it? I’m going to be last in line!

ANNOUNCER (OFF)
Last call for fans waiting to see Gal Gadot in building C, floor 12.

MARIANNE
This is building A.

RANDY
There’s a third building?

MARIANNE
With 12 floors! I’m going to miss them!

RANDY
Not if I have anything to do with it.  Come on!

MARIANNE
What are you doing?

(RANDY gathers all her stuff)

RANDY
Helping you see Wonder Woman!  Here I come to save the day! Randy is on the way!

(RANDY takes her hand and they run)

MARIANNE
Hurry!

RANDY
And when we’re done, we’ll come back and tell everyone about Ashley’s life of crime.  How about that Miss Community Service?!

MARIANNE
No, that’s not what you asked. Oh, thats right. You asked, which line is this? It’s to meet both. I bought the super deluxe wonder pack. I get to meet them, get their autographs and get a picture with them. It wasn’t cheap. Quite expensive actually. It cost

You rich or something?

No, not at all,  I’ve been saving for this ever since I found out. I gave up:

But she’s real to me.

RALPH
How long have you been waiting?

(RANDY notices her sleeping bag)

MARIANNE
I’ve been waiting here for 10. ___________________ days. I’m first in line too!

RANDY
It must be a pretty expensive line if you’re the only one.

MARIANNE
It showed I’m the most dedicated fan of all.

There’s another building at the convention center?

That’s our state beauty queen pageant winner Ashley Addams. Miss

RANDY
Because she’s a jerk. She thinks she’s better than everyone else and tries to make sure us pee-ons know it.

(OLIVIA has a lemonade stand. NOAH is drinking a cup of lemonade)

NOAH
You make amazing lemonade.

OLIVIA
What?

NOAH
I just wanted to tell you that.

OLIVIA
Well… thanks.

NOAH
I try to say one nice thing each day. And today, it’s for you.

OLIVIA
That’s a good way to be. Try to keep it nice.

NOAH
My grandpa taught me that.

OLIVIA
He sounds like a good man.

NOAH
The best.

OLIVIA
Well, you’re lucky to have him. If only more people had someone like that. I don’t think I’ve had a good compliment in a long time.

NOAH
That’s just wrong. People should be nicer. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect.

OLIVIA
R-e-s-p-e-c-t - but there ain’t none for me.

NOAH
I keep hoping if I do enough kind things it will catch on and grow. I keep picturing a better world around me and then I do little things to try and make it that way.

OLIVIA
What do you see for our street here?

NOAH
Trees… lots of trees. And a cleaner park. And no more rent payments for the Williams family. I heard they were getting kicked out of their house.

OLIVIA
Their mom lost her job and the dad isn’t around anymore.

NOAH
That’s sad. I wonder what they are doing to do?

OLIVIA
There’s no free rides in life. You owe me a dollar for that lemonade.

(NOAH tosses some coins on the counter)

NOAH
There you go.

OLIVIA
What’s this?  Throwing some gold and silver my way?

NOAH
Those is a Sacagawea dollar and two 50 cent pieces. I love old coins. My grandpa gives them to me. One more cup of lemonade, please.

OLIVIA
These are cool.

NOAH
Sometimes they’re worth more than their face value.

OLIVIA
Then why give them away?

NOAH
It’s no fun to keep it all to myself. I like to share.

OLIVIA
Everyone needs to share more. I think I had sharing beaten out of me. My family and I play Monopoly and it brings out the worst in me. I have to win it all and be in total control of the board. I want all the money and love crushing my competition. But all of my brothers and sisters are that way too.  We have so many fights over that game that my dad finally set the board on fire.

NOAH
On fire?

OLIVIA
He tossed it in the fireplace along with all the Monopoly money. All we had left were the little homes and hotels.

NOAH
What do you do with them?

OLIVIA
We use them like poker chips and play poker.

NOAH
No way.

OLIVIA
Then Dad burned the cards.

NOAH
That’s too funny.

OLIVIA
And some of it might be true.

NOAH
So what did you dream about doing with your life?

OLIVIA
Win Monopoly.

NOAH
Besides that.

OLIVIA
Win the lottery.

NOAH
You have a winning attitude.

OLIVIA
I want to be a winner. I’m just not sure what I want to win. Anything. But so far, nothing.

NOAH
You win every day you’re alive.

OLIVIA
I guess so.

NOAH
I win every time I have a great cup of lemonade like this one.

OLIVIA
I suppose that’s your way of telling me you want a refill?

NOAH
Maybe.

(OLIVIA pours him another cup)

NOAH (CONT.)
So you have any dreams? Ones that don’t involve winning the lottery?

OLIVIA
You’re very chatty today, aren’t you?

NOAH
Your customers don’t usually hang out and talk?

OLIVIA
I don’t mind. I mean I see you around all the time, but usually you’re pretty quiet… sitting by a tree… or in a tree… and you always have that notebook. You doodle?

NOAH
I write stories.

OLIVIA
You write stories… on purpose? For fun?! Weird.

NOAH
I love writing. But today I feel like talking. I think I’m having writer’s block anyway. Talking might help.

OLIVIA
Imagine me helping someone write.

NOAH
What’s strange about that?

OLIVIA
I can’t really write. I get bad grades in English.

NOAH
Teachers wouldn’t like my stories. They’re pretty crazy.

OLIVIA
It must be fun to have a talent. I’m not good at anything.

NOAH
You make the best lemonade.

OLIVIA
I guess.

NOAH
I bet you’re good at other things too… like Monopoly.

OLIVIA
If only the real world were as easy to figure out as Monopoly. There aren’t many good chance cards in the real world. And I don’t collect $200 every time I pass Go.

NOAH
But hopefully you don’t get to jail as often either.

OLIVIA
Nope. Just visiting.

NOAH
What if I told you one of those coins I paid you with was worth a lot of money?

(OLIVIA gathers them and looks at them)

OLIVIA
Really?

NOAH
What would you do with it?

OLIVIA
I think I’d help the William’s family keep their house, so their mom didn’t have to worry anymore. I wish people didn’t have to worry like that. Imagine losing your home. That must be so horrible.

(NOAH pulls out some more coins)

OLIVIA
What are you doing?

NOAH
I feel like granting some wishes tonight.

OLIVIA
You my fairy godmother or something?

NOAH
Fairy godfather.

OLIVIA
You’re serious?

(NOAH pulls out a specific coin)

NOAH
This is the one we need.

OLIVIA
Said in a mysterious voice… what’s special about this one, Fairy Godfather?

NOAH
It’s magic.

OLIVIA
Magic?

NOAH
When the time is right, make a wish… and maybe it will come true.

OLIVIA
What if I wish for world peace?

NOAH
Well, us Fairy Godfathers have limits… no wishing for more wishes, I can’t kill anyone, I can’t make anyone fall in love and I can’t do world peace…

OLIVIA
You’re not a very powerful Fairy Godfather.

NOAH
There’s so little magic left in the world.  Except for this coin. Whenever I find a little bit of magic, I tuck it away for just the right occasion.

OLIVIA
Is that a nickel?

NOAH
A very special nickel. The 1913 Liberty Nickel.

OLIVIA
I thought 13 was an unlucky number.

NOAH
But 1913 is very lucky.  It was the year of the very first crossword puzzle. And the prize for being the first person to solve that puzzle?  A nickel.  But not just any nickel.  This nickel. The Liberty Nickel.

OLIVIA
The magic Liberty Nickel.

NOAH
Correct.

OLIVIA
And what is this magic nickel worth Fairy Godfather?

NOAH
More than a nickel. My grandpa gave it to me and said it was very special and to save it for something really important. I think the Williams are important enough, don’t you?

OLIVIA
So what do we do? Do we have to spend the magic nickel before midnight?

NOAH
How about I give you some more Sacajawea's and we’ll take the rest of the lemonade over to the Williams kids?

OLIVIA
What about the magic coin?

NOAH
Should we give it to Mrs. Williams?

OLIVIA
If we don’t help her, who will?

NOAH
I don’t know.

OLIVIA
You’re a good neighbor, Noah.

NOAH
Like my grandpa always says, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not.” Well, I don’t think he made that up, but he said it a lot.

OLIVIA
I like that. Let’s take your magic coin and make things better.

(They take the lemonade and exit)

"Luddites of the Industrial Revolution" dramatic monologue for male

Luddites of the Industrial Revolution
by D. M. Larson

January, 1813

I miss the England of my childhood. Many of us were poor, but our lives were simple and uncomplicated. Our air was clean and the land was pure. Our farms sustained us and gave us what we needed. But the desires of wealth seduced the greedy and they plotted new ways to profit. The steam powered machines of these wretched times gave them the means to grow their fortunes, in turn, changing our lives forever.

Everyone has been seduced by the power of these mechanical monsters in this age of steam. People wonder in amazement at the steam powered creatures that occupy our factories. But at what cost?

We once used wind and water for our work, keeping our vocations simple and clean. These new machines demand coal to create steam power, but this comes at a price. Miners rip up the land for coal to feed these hungry monsters. People have left the gentle countryside farms and crowded into cities to find work in the factories. But, they are met with low wages and disease.

I am on trial today because of the wrongs they say I have committed, but I say I am here because of the justices I have done. Our government passes laws to protect the factories from harm. Who is protecting the people?

I am proud of my defiance. I cheered as I smashed those job stealing machines with a sledgehammer. I celebrated as I watched the fire, I set with my own hands, burn the factory to the ground. I confess to standing up against the wrongs that have been done to me and my community.

They call me a Luddite to tear me down, but wear this name as a badge of honor. I proudly follow General Ludd on his quest to destroy the mechanized mannances of our land. I despise the new machines that replaced my vocation. For many generations, my family has been proud of our skills, passing them down from father to son.  But, this noble tradition is only a memory, because those machines allow the factory owners to bring in unskilled workers, with no experience and no training, to do our jobs. Once my vocation was a craft with products made lovingly by artisans, but now the machines spew out poor imitations. There is no pride in what they create, only profit. Skilled men are cast aside, because they seek cheaper labor. These factories employ women and children to feed their madness.

They even prefer women and children because they don’t need to pay them as much as they pay men. Sometimes men send their whole families to earn enough wage to make up for his lost income. But there is no rest for these families. I even heard of a pregnant woman who gave birth one day and had to go back to work the next because they needed the money so badly. This is not a living wage they pay, but a slave wage.

Children are driven to work endless hours for a mere pittance, never seeing the sunlight. They abuse these children and task them to do dangerous jobs, because they are expendable. These workers have all become slaves to the machines.

I plead guilty to destroying your steam powered creations, because they are savage beasts that ravaged my community. The machines shroud our homes in darkness. They spew out black stench that fills the air and turns day into night. The dirty air chokes us and fills our lungs with disease. The smoke from the factories injects the clouds with their toxins and infects the rain.  Our water is poisoned by this an acid rain.

The greed of the factory owners has cast us into the abyss of an industrial nightmare. Is this really a revolution? Or a curse?
